Sunscreen & Skin Facts
Chemical vs Mineral: Most chemical sunscreens are made up of small particles that absorb deep into the skin, some of which have been found in plasma & urine. Mineral sunscreen particles are larger and remain in the upper/ outer layers of dead skin and work by reflecting/ scattering UV rays
Numerous studies in the past decade have looked at potential health hazards of chemical sunscreens given that many of these chemicals are known or suspected hormone disruptors, allergens, and carcinogens in some cases. Chemical sunscreens increase free-radicals and may contribute to skin aging.
- UVA radiation produced by the sun can be as harmful on a cloudy day as it is on a sunny day.
- UV light is the cause of at least 90% of basal & squamous cell skin cancers
- Sand, water, and snow can reflect UV rays and increase exposure.
- 90% of changes that we attribute to aging are caused by sun damage.
A naturally occurring vitamin & antioxidant which is the most abundant antioxidant in human skin & is essential for collagen synthesis.
Oral vs Topical: limited absorption in the intestine which leads to inadequate bioavailability in the skin thus topical is ideal for skin benefits.
Aging leads to less vitamin C in the skin. UV damage, pollution, and smoking can further lower Vitamin C levels in the skin.
Sunscreen alone blocks 55% of free radicals from UV rays. Vitamin C provides a UV-protective effect by neutralizing free-radicals
For UV-protective benefits, studies show that 10% Vitamin C statistically reduces UV induced redness and sunburn. Most OTC products don’t come close to 10%
Vitamin C works best in combination with Vitamin E which potentiates its’ effect.
A chemical exfoliation which removes the outer layers of the skin to improve overall skin function and appearance. Stimulates cell renewal and regenerates a healthier epidermis & dermis. There are different peels available that vary in depth of penetration.
Procedure Time: ~30 minutes
Down Time: 1-2 weeks. Skin may or may not visibly peel and this is unrelated to the efficacy of the treatment.
Results: Improvement in skin texture & brightness may be seen after a single treatment, however, a series of treatments (one month apart) are usually needed for more marked improvement in skin smoothness, reduction of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, oiliness, and acne. Results are enhanced when combined with other treatments such as dermaplaning and high quality daily skin care.
Areas treated: Face. Caution in darker skin tones which tend to have a thicker stratum corneum & dermis as well as blood vessels that are more prominent and dilated. All of this can lead to increased chances of hyperpigmentation and inflammation in darker skin tones.
The Alumier Foundation
Many of AlumierMD’s founders and investors are originally from South Africa and maintain strong connections with the country.
While visiting, they were approached by Lyson Ndluli, a headteacher from Acornhoek, a town in Bushbuckridge in South Africa.
At the time, Lyson Ndluli was single-handedly financing the education of the students at the Nhlengelo Primary School where he taught.
The Alumier Foundation is AlumierMD’s primary global philanthropic project. Its initiatives have enabled hundreds of students to further their education, changing their lives forever. AlumierMD is a global community of skincare experts united by a commitment to education. As part of our dedication to learning, we communicate information about why skincare choices matter, which includes how using products made with sustainably sourced ingredients can help to protect our patients and our planet.
